Summary:
This training aims to guide learners within the Expanded Public Works Programme on how to identify different forms of dune erosion and how best to control them. The training aimed to include the development of a simple, yet informative user manual.
The dune stabilization and erosion control methods training was developed and facilitated by Bruce Taplin as a one-day skills development course. The training consisted of three components: (1) Theoretical, (2) Practical, and (3) Assessment. Working for the coasts recognised methods for stabilizing coastal dunes were used as a guideline to ensure operational consistency for learners in the EPWP. As a part of this training trainees received a learning guide developed to assist training, and which could be used after the training as a field resource.
This training on the rehabilitation and maintenance of dunes and beaches was done in compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (Act No. 107 of 1998), the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (Act No. 108 of 1996), and the Integrated Coastal Management Act (Act No. 36 of 2014).
The outcomes of the training were for trainees to:
• Understand what coastal dunes are
• Be able to identify different types of coastal processes and different forms of erosion
• Be able to identify the most suitable dune stabilization and erosion control methods
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the control method
This training helped trainees to learn about the importance of coastal systems and their protection, as well as enabled them to identify and control erosion in the best way possible. This training prepared and equipped trainees, helping them develop the necessary skills required for participation in restoration work along the coast.
